Painting tutorial: metallic gold

THE TOOLS OF TRADE

1ST STEP

Spray several thin layers of good un dercoat spray, i use Maston Grey Undercoat spray, which costs 3.5€ per can here at Finland. It gives a very smooth dead flat (matt) finish.

Don't spray too much or from too close, you only end up ruining your models, destroying all the nice little details.

2ND STEP

Paint few thin layers of Metallic Gold. Don't worry if you miss deepest places, because later steps take care of that.

I used Coat d' Arms Bright Gold, which is more silvery than GW's golds, which i like a lot.

3RD STEP

Wash gold areas with thinned GW devlan mud. I use matt medium to thin down washes, because it kills shininess, increases transparency and doesn't make washes too watery (like pure water does). It's important to use matt washes, because whole idea is to make more contrast between shadows (matt) and highlights (gloss).

4TH STEP

Now wash gold areas with thinned GW gryphonne sepia, to give it little more color saturation.

5TH STEP

Highlight few spots with pure Bright Gold. This step brings back some shininess, don't overdo this step because the whole idea was to kill some shininess that pure metallic paint has.
